I just started reading Fred Patten's new book Watching Anime, Reading
Manga: 25 Years of Essays and Reviews.
Great stuff, in many ways a documentary snapshot of fandom in America.
Given the dramatic changes in availablilty and treatment of anime in the
US during that time this is a significant work for anyone interested in
popular culture.
I have meet Fred and several times we have done panels together at
conventions. At Fanime and few years ago we were introduced as the "Old
Guys" of anime fandom as we both have been fans since the mid 1970s. I
also found out Fred and I share a common career as we are both
librarians (he is retired).
