I just started reading Fred Patten's new book Watching Anime, Reading
Manga: 25 Years of Essays and Reviews.
Great stuff, in many ways a documentary snapshot of fandom in America.
Given the dramatic changes in availablilty and treatment of anime in the
US during that time this is a significant work for anyone interested in
popular culture.
I have meet Fred and several times we have done panels together at
conventions. At Fanime and few years ago we were introduced as the "Old
Guys" of anime fandom as we both have been fans since the mid 1970s. I
also found out Fred and I share a common career as we are both
librarians (he is retired).

Just wait, I plan to update the bibiographies next year and to add a big
selection of works that I have found useful in writing the Anime
Companion volumes.
Volume 2 of the Anime Companion is almost ready to turn in to the
publisher, expect it out next year.

I probably knew you were an author, but I had forgotten it.
That is awesome though and those are books I have actually
heard of so that makes it even better.

Thanks.
It will be very different given the large number of historical based
anime that have come out. When I did volume one there was one anime in
the Bakumatsu, Daggar of Kamui, and one short anime in the Meiji.
I of course will be including all the foods I can. I have my priorities
after all.

I have started reading Watching Anime, Reading Manga and it's is very
informative. There are so many things I did not know about that are in
the book. In many ways it is a snapshot of the development of fandom in
America.

Ah, recipes. Have you read the Barry Hughart "Bridge of Birds" books
yet? I've always thought they would make a great historical fantasy
anime series.

A long time ago before any possibility of an anime book
being published in the US, I once printed out
his whole companion website... lots and lots of pages
(on the univ's printer and paper expense, of course ^_^; ).
I had my reasons for a handy hard copy within reach,
including the computers and Net connection weren't as fast then,
no ready access to the Net all the time...
I was bored and the only one in the lab room. ^_^

I remember those days when a person would use Alta Vista
and search for anime, rather than an individual title and come
up with hundreds of results. There was no Google yet, no IE.
It was an innocent time. *sighs*

What's funny was that I was an undergrad in a grad lab;
yet people there think I was the student in-charge of it.
(There's always supposed to be one, but sometimes no one.)
Maybe because I seemed to know what I was doing in the computer,
know how to set and unjam the printer and where to get paper,
and sometimes use the phone there.
So, nobody questioned what I was doing. ^_^
