View Full Version : Meganekko page - playing with stylesheets
Rob Kelk
2nd October 2004, 12:49 AM
I'm finally getting to the point where there's plenty of content, and I
should care about how "pretty" the webpage is. Does the new layout look
good, or should I be tweaking the stylesheet some more? (If the latter,
please tell me what's wrong with the layout and what browser you're
using. I use Mozilla 1.7.3, so I know it looks good on that...)

Chika informs me that the pages are pretty good in NetSurf, but do not
show at all well in Oregano. Good to know that I have to fix that or
else I'm shutting out a fair chunk of Mac users...
So, what do they look like in IE? (I don't run that browser at all.)

Looks fine to me in IE 6.
Am I not going to get a credit for writing a description for one of

Passes the font resize test.
Doesn't break when I deliberately set the encoding incorrectly.
Doesn't break with images disabled.
Looks good from an IE6 Standpoint.
Not that it really matters, but you might be happy to know that it
works in Lynx too. :-)

Rob, the layout is an improvement over the previous one, but I suggest that
you limit the number of images per page. This may help people with slow
connections, but not me as I am using a broadband connection.

I checked with mine, looks OK, though you may want to consider setting the
default font to sans-serif (not really a problem for me, as I normally use
Opera, and have the default font set to Verdana).

Mac users? <Looks at Miyuki - you didn't sneak a PowerPC in there when I
wasn't looking, did you?> :)
Actually, I sent those examples because I thought it would give you an
idea about how the page degraded on different browsers. It's something
which CSS can be a bit of a problem with if you aren't careful about it.

Not had a chance to fire up Misa and her infernal Microsoft stuff yet, but
it should be interesting.
On the subject of the amount of loading needed to see a page, could you
not break the page up into alphabetical subpages? It might make the FAQ
easier to work on too.

Abraham Evangelista gave a more detailed review, but I couldn't find
any problems after fiddling with some settings, either. It's a very
straightforward design, so if the formatting works out (which it seems
to), you probably don't have a lot to worry about in terms of browser
compatibility.

Abraham Evangelista gave a more detailed review, but I couldn't find
any problems after fiddling with some settings, either. It's a very
straightforward design, so if the formatting works out (which it seems
to), you probably don't have a lot to worry about in terms of browser
compatibility.

Nah, 's okay. I just like seeing my name up in lights.

That should be fewer images per page.

Hello Rob,
I just feel that the titles, pictures and description seem to be overcrowded
under IE6 on WinXP Pro, but using Mozilla and KDE Konqueror, the layout looks
fine.
I looked at you CSS and HTML code, I recommend the following:
Update your current meganekko.css file to:
---Begin---
body {background-color:white; }
h1, h2, h3 {color:black;font-family:sans-serif;font-weight:bold;margin:0;padding:0; }
h3 {margin-top:0.5cm;margin-bottom:0; }
p {color:black; font-family:sans-serif; margin:0; padding-top:1em; float: right; }
hr {border:"1px groove black";clear:both}
img {font-size:smaller;font-weight:normal;font-family:sans-serif; border:1px solid #000;}
.left {float:left; }
.right {float: right; }
---End---
With the above, your HTML code will be more simpler to:
<h3>Vanessa LAIRD</h3>
<p>
<img class="left" src="vanessa_l-1.jpg" alt="Vanessa" title="Vanessa" width="93" height="150">
<img class="right" src="vanessa_l-2.jpg" alt="Vanessa" title="Vanessa" width="145" height="150">
Vanessa is the Chief Computer Operator on the SDF-1 <cite><a href="../primer/primer-m.html#macross">Macross</a></cite>
bridge, and the youngest of the "bridge bunnies" trio. (In the <cite>Robotech</cite>
adaptation, she's named Vanessa Leeds.)
</p>
With the entry [padding-top:1em; float: right; ] for <P> in the css you no
longer need to enter a <BR CLEAR="ALL"> for every row.
This is just my suggestion, feel free to adjust the values in here or just ignore all this.

Informative would help...
You've got two pages of Family-name full-timers, split alphabetically
A-K and L-Z but the hotlinks call them Page 1 and Page 2. Page 3 leads
to single-name full-timers. Better descriptions on the hotlinks would
help, and maybe some more splitting as with all the graphics it takes
too long for a single paage to load, even over broadband. More pages
would also help as you update the pages to add new meganekkos in the
future.

Actually, page 2 is L-W and page 3 is X-Z and single-name. (That's why
I went with numbered pages at this stage, rather than lettered pages
that are still subject to change.)

I don't think we need to go with 27 pages of full-timers and 27 pages of
part-timers just yet... (That's how I just re-organized the Anime
Primer, which *is* big enough for that treatment. Take a look at that
subsite and let me know whether you really want the meganekko gallery
organized that way.)

I tried leaving out the <BR CLEAR="ALL"> earlier, and discovered that
the pages didn't "degrade gracefully" in browsers that don't display
CSS. I fear that we're stuck with these for the time being.

Even so, I think there is some merit in the descriptive links suggestion.
In my private notes of anime I've watched, the HTML version had this
linkage right from my early days (I needed notes even to keep track
of just a couple dozen titles). I knew I'd have to rework them every
time I bifurcated the files, but the convenience during the much more
frequent lookups far outweighed the inconvenience of editing changes
due to file content changes.

Taking from my experience with my private notes, you don't need to
break it down 27+ ways. I started with 3 and am now up to 15, adding
a new link every time I split a file because the file started getting
too large. So far I've been able to stick to the first letter, but I
intend on bifurcations based on the second letter soon. My point is,
you can simply stick with the number of files needed to keep file sizes
within some criteria, grouping letters accordingly, and setting up
links accordingly.
As for criteria, I think you have something like 50 entries on Page 1.
When I'm going through online catalogs and the site allows for tuning,
I find 50 non-image entries and 10 image entries most comfortable or
convenient to work with. I would then suggest splitting the pages
up so that each page has ROUGHLY 20 - 25 entries.
HOWEVER, to counter these arguments, I do find having more monolithic
pages more convenient for searching for either character names or
show titles.
Speaking of which, if you stay with the larger file format, could you
add links at the top and bottom for certain natural "milestones" on a
given page? If I'm looking for someone with name starting with letter
"H", that kind of link is a fast way of getting to approximately the
right place to search for a certain character. Note, this is a separate
suggestion from adding links at the top of each page to the other pages.
And if you really want to go nuts on the crossreferencing, put the same
AT each milestone (I'm not saying you should, because at some point
these things become clutter rather than convenience).

Well, I *did* say "at this stage"... ^_^
I did a redesign over the last couple of hours, and have uploaded the
result. There are now seven pages for the full-time meganekko, and
three for the part-timers. More importantly, the links to the pages are
at least somewhat descriptive.

Oh, good; that's what I aimed at, also. (The "no family name" page for
the full-time meganekko has closer to 30 entries, though - I just
couldn't come up with any way to split that group.)

Hmmmmm... Perhaps an index page (with just character and anime names)
would be in order. I do appreciate a good index in others' works, so I
should supply one in mine.

I had put the code in to implement that functionality, but never got
around to actualy adding the links... <embarassed grin>
Since I've gone with the smaller pages, I hope that this is less of a
concern.

It would almost definitely help - I just got a suggestion (from a "new"
fan) to add a character who's already in the Gallery. There's my
project for lunchtime tomorrow...
