The Story Continues...
Nabiki's right eye twitched as Ukyo explained what had happened at the
end of the fight with the so-called Martial Arts Cowboy. Her family turned
the same logic that had previously caused Ranma to be forced to behave
like Akane to force her to take Ranma's place. On the face of it, she really
should have insisted that they get a second opinion rather than trust one
Dr. Tofu made while Kasumi was in the immediate vicinity.
And she had thought the man was dangerous to be around when his
Kasumi attacks were obvious...
"Anyway," Ukyo went on, "I kinda got picked to be the one to come and
tell you before everyone gets back. Ran-chan kinda insisted that Akane
get her injuries checked out at a regular hospital this time. Said
something about how she should have known better than to trust
Dr. Tofu's judgment when he knew Kasumi was nearby."
Nabiki's right eye continued to twitch, and now a few hairs had toinged
out of place.
"At any rate," Ukyo sighed, "Ran-chan now thinks he's you, of all people.
He's got your icy cool mannerisms, the way you walk, the way you talk.
Heck, he even had your casual dismissal of 'Ranma's' welfare!"
Nabiki was nothing if not observant. Sure, she made the occasional
mistake and had her own foibles. She could admit that to herself, if no
one else. Right now her gut instinct was screaming at her that her family
was at the hospital, along with Ranma. Ranma, who now thought that
'she' was Nabiki.
Ranma, who was apparently abandoned, from 'Nabiki's' point of view,
back at the scene of the battle.
Nabiki sighed, summoning her calm business demeanor. "I suppose I
should change into some Ranma's clothes and go with you to the
hospital then."
"Suits me, Sugar."
"Fine. Wait right here, I'll be back shortly." With that, Nabiki calmly got
up and walked up the stairs to the room that Ranma and Genma shared.
Knowing that she didn't have much time, she quickly rifled through
Ranma's clean clothes for his standard Tong shirt and loose pants,
along with a pair of his boxers before neatly sliding the drawers closed.
Rather than change right away, she let herself out the window, dropping
to the ground at quietly as she could.
'Ranma' had been left behind in the field of battle. 'Nabiki' would be
expecting him to show up later bearing the signs of a tough fight, with
perhaps extra damage from being attacked by the usual gang of idiots as
he made his way home. Ranma, who often told his best buddy Ucchan
all of his problems.
Ukyo, who was not at the hospital with 'Nabiki' and the others, getting
Akane checked out...
No, Nabiki certainly did not have the luxury of changing into Ranma's
outfit first. She had to get as much of a head start as possible by
employing the so-called Saotome Secret Technique. She'd come back
later, when it was safer.
* * *
Ukyo waited for a bit, and was beginning to wonder what was keeping
Nabiki. As tempting as supplying supporting injuries may be, she doubted
that Ran-chan would appreciate it when she recovered. Still, it had been
fun to tease Nabiki with a subtle bluff as the opportunities to be able to
pull one off against the girl were few and far between.
"I brought the make up kit," Kasumi announce cheerily as she entered
the room with said kit and a red wig with a pigtail. "Oh, where did Nabiki
go?"
"She went up to Ran-chan's room to change, Sugar. You jumped the gun
on our little joke."
"Oh dear, I thought that she'd be up and back by now."
"Maybe this was a bad idea. Why don't you go up and let Nabiki off the
hook while applying the 'scuff marks' okay? I'll just go on ahead to the
hospital and see if anyone thought to insist that 'Nabiki' get her head
examined too."
* * *
'Nabiki' waited with the others in the hospital lounge while the doctors
were checking Akane's injuries. She was trying to wait patiently, but two
idiots were bothering her...
"Now, ah..." Soun stammered hesitantly. "Nabiki, why don't you let the
nice doctors check you out as well?"
"Don't be ridiculous, Daddy. Akane's bill is going to leave us tight this
month as it is. We can't afford a frivolous check up just because you're
being over protective."
"We're just saying that maybe you should get your head examined..."
'Nabiki' glared at Genma. "Say that again, Uncle Saotome, and you'll
wish you'd woken up in a zoo by the time I'm through with you. Why
don't you make yourself useful and go help Ukyo find Ranma? Akane
will be worried about him, and the Amazons may have doubled back to
search for him themselves once they got Mousse straightened out."
"I, uh, don't think that will be a problem..." Genma wilted under the
accusatory glare from his deluded son. Despite his protests, he left to
conduct a token search, intending to simply head for the dojo to check
to see if Ukyo had managed to convince Nabiki to stand in for Ranma.
In the meantime, the 'Nabiki' quietly waited with the others, reading
business magazines while formulating a plan to sell Uncle Saotome to a
zoo or circus in order to pay for Akane's hospital bill. Might be time to
get more pictures of Ranma's girl side to sell too...
* * *
Nabiki ran as if her life depended on it. Any moment now, Ukyo would
discover that she was missing, and would come after her with the intent
of providing authentic supporting injuries to support Ranma's current
delusion. While she didn't think that Ukyo would intentionally kill her, she
was not as confidant that the okonomiaki chef wouldn't be willing to hurt
her as long as it might help her Ran-chan get better.
Ducking into a relatively secluded alley, Nabiki took stock of her
situation.
Ukyo did not seem to be anywhere in sight, but that was no real assurance
given her roof-hopping abilities. Still, this was as private as she could
get
without going much further and risking attracting attention she did not
want.
Time to change into Ranma's clothes.
Rather than do it all at once, Nabiki did the exchange piecemeal. Her
blouse and bra were set on a bin, replaced by Ranma's silk Tong shirt.
Kicking off her shoes, she set them and her socks on the bin next to the
previous articles. To keep the next part of the switch as brief as possible,
she set the Ranma's boxers in place in his pants so that they would be
ready. Pulling her jeans and panties off in one smooth motion she tossed
them on the head of the large dog that had poked its head out... from...
behind...
Nabiki paused, her hand inches away from Ranma's pants, and turned
her head to look at the dog that was looking at her. A strange calm
occurred, lasting a few moments until she moved her hand closer to
Ranma's pants. The large dog started to growl, causing her to retreat
a few paces until it seemed to calm down again.
"Okay," she thought to herself, "no reason to panic. The nice doggy is
just defending its space and I just happened to pick a bad spot to put the
stuff down, that's all. Oh kami, I'm outside wearing nothing but one of
Ranma's shirts, facing down the biggest stray dog I've ever seen in Nerima!
This just does not happen to me!"
"Calm down girl," Nabiki continued her internal monologue. "Just be
assertive and confident, and the nice doggy will realize its place and
back off..."
* * *
Stepping out of an arcade, two friends witnessed something that they
never even considered.
"Daisuke?"
"Yes, Hiroshi?"
"Did you just see Nabiki Tendo run by, being chased by a Doberman?"
"No."
"Oh, I must be seeing things then..."
"She was being chased by a German Shepard."
"Then she really is running down the street wearing one of Ranma's shirts?"
"And nothing else that I can see."
The two boys thought about that for a moment, with silly grins on their
faces. Then Daisuke started walking in the direction that Nabiki and the
dog had come from.
"Where are we going? Aren't we going to help Nabiki?"
"Are you kidding? We'd never catch up to them, and even if we did, what
could we do about it? I know where that dog was hiding out. I lost my
baseball glove to it yesterday morning. I intend to get it back while I can
if it's still in one piece."
"Sounds like a plan."
