Apparently there are people here who like Crest of the Stars, so I guess I
can get this off my shoulders... :-)

The knock on the door raised me from a fitful sleep. Hearing the
door open, I bolted up to a sitting position immediately
regretting it. The walls of the room swam around me, and I
saw dozens of amorphous, ghostly shapes with my spatial
sense.
Glancing at the door, I saw the maid standing in the half-open
doorway, looking rather surprised. It took me moments to
compose myself. I was still seeing spots, and the ghostly
shapes danced around me. Also, my head was throbbing, like
something was trying to force its way out through my forehead.
What had happened to me?
Showing a weakness before a vassal, however, was
unthinkable. I glared at the woman as well as I could in my
condition. "Yes?"
The maid opened her mouth a few times, apparently at a loss of
words. "I, uhh... That is..." Her eyes were darting up and down,
like she was checking me for something.
"What is the matter, vassal Alis?"
She finally seemed to gather her wits about her, and bowed
respectfully. "Your highness, my apologies for disturbing you. I
was about to come to make your highness bed. I.."
Still maintaining her bow, she glanced at me.
"I did not know your highness was still asleep."
I squinted at the clock. It was well past the time I usually ate
breakfast. What had happened to me? Could this be some strange
side-effect of staying on the ground too long?
"Is..." the maid continued, still staring at me. "Is your highness
all right?"
Resisting the inexplainable need to curl into a ball I answered. "I
am fine vassal Alis. You will come back later, when I have left
for breakfast."
She didn't leave, though. "Are y... Is your highness certain?"
I frowned, sending the pain inside my forehead into new levels.
"Leave. Now."
Finally, the maid decided to not question my orders anymore. I sighed
and slumped down the moment she closed the door. The sudden motion
caused more spots, made my stomach jump, and bile rose to my mouth.
The taste was bitter.
Some minutes later the spots and shapes had subsided enough and I
stumbled out of bed. Whatever had caused this didn't seem to
go away. I had to get help, and there was only on person on this
planet who I could trust enough. But before I could contact Jinto, I
glanced at the closet's mirrored door and recieved another shock: the
skin on my face was bright red.
Blinking at the image, I touched my cheek. It stung, like I had poked
the cheek with a needle. Also, the skin on the back of my hand was
almost as red as my face. Perhaps I had been poisoned; I could not
think of any natural cause for my current state.
At that moment the door to my room slammed open and I whirled around. The
rapid turn was too much, however, and my feet collapsed from under
me. Just as I was about crash to the floor, Jinto caught me.
For a few seconds I allowed myself to be held by him. Then, as
he was obviously trying to get me back to bed, I let myself be
taken there. Looking at Jinto I saw that the skin on his face was
also red, though not nearly as bright as my own. I stared at him;
had he been poisoned too? I also noted vassal Alis at the door.
Had she fetched Jinto?
As I reached to touch his face, Jinto smiled at me reassuringly.
"Don't worry, Lafiel," he said. "It's just a bit of sunburn."
"Sun.. burn?"
He nodded. "Yes. I'm sorry, I should have guessed this might
happen. The sun is pretty strong here in the summer."
Closing my eyes for a second, I took a deep breath. "Jinto."
"Yes."
"What is a sunburn?"
---
"Permanent!?" I was feeling a lot better now. Jinto had
explained the concept of a sunburn, as well as sunstroke, after
it had become obvious I had suffered one. I had also rested and
drank some water. The worst effects of the sunstroke were
already subsiding, although I was still feeling rather weak.
He was embarrased, probably by my outburst. He was scratching is chin, a
nervous habit. "Ah, I really aren't certain about it, Lafiel."
"Explain," I commanded. While my appearance is not that
important to me (after all, it was something my father had decided, not I)
I did not like the idea of my skin changing color all of a sudden.
"Well, I tend to tan rather easily. Usually, when I was a kid, I
didn't get a sunburn more than once in a summer. And most
people get at least a bit tanned if they burn as badly as you
did." Jinto paused for a moment and glanced at the windows of
my room before continuing. "I'm not sure if Abh can get tan,
however."
---
If I were a petty person I would now be thinking that spending time on
a sufrace world and getting a sunburn was worth this. I am, however,
an Abriel and the Abriels are not petty.
Still, the sight of admiral Spoor gaping in open-mouthed surprise
was amusing. I even let a bit of a smile to show on my face when she
dropped her sword.
"You... Your skin?"
Fin.
---
Yes, I know, I should have stopped writing when Lafiel ask about
sunburns. If I had, it might have been funny. I could not, however, write
a Crest story without Spoor in it.
Please don't start speculating whether space-adapted parahumans can
get a sunburn.
This was orginally written in March 2002, but I didn't get around
posting it before. Continuity-wise this happens on Martine, after
Battleflag/Banner II.
