Editorial
Busy month, a bad case of the flu did not help, however I am able to
get this newsletter out as well as finish up a few other
commitments. This month congratulations are due to TOKYOPOP for
Cowboy Bebop vol.1 making it on the Books For The Teen Age 2003 List
of the New York Public Library.
Good news for anime fans in Northern California, this Fall, September
13-14 to be exact, will be the Japan Town Anime Faire 2003. They
don't have a web site up yet, in fact the con was announced during
the last day of the Cherry Blossom Festival.
OK on to the stuff.

Los Angeles, CA (April 2, 2003)- TOKYOPOP=A8-the leading U.S. publisher
of manga-is pleased to announce its expansion into the United
Kingdom. With London-based offices, TOKYOPOP U.K., Ltd. will build on
the phenomenal success of TOKYOPOP's U.S. publishing business, taking
the company to the next level and tapping Britain's budding market of
manga enthusiasts.
TOKYOPOP U.K. has partnered with Red Route Distribution Ltd. to
extend its manga business into the country's more than 2,000
bookstores. Red Route is the leading supplier of graphic novels to
the British book trade and specialized retail market. The two
companies solidified their relationship during this year's London
Book Fair, at which they featured a joint exhibit.
"Launching TOKYOPOP U.K. was the natural next step for us considering
our current state of progression," said Stuart Levy, the company's
Chairman, Founder & CEO. "And we are delighted to team with Red Route
in getting TOKYOPOP manga into the hands of a whole new territory of
readers."
This news comes in the wake of an incredible year of growth for
TOKYOPOP, during which the company more than doubled its revenue and
increased its book trade penetration by some 300%. Just one year ago,
TOKYOPOP sent the graphic novel industry reeling when it introduced
its line of 100% Authentic Manga (printed right-to-left), an instant
hit with consumers that far exceeded sales expectations. TOKYOPOP
titles now dominate BookScan's weekly Graphic Novel Bestseller
charts, consistently achieving 50% of the top 50 positions.

THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY
Hit Graphic Novel to be Included on the "Books For The Teen Age 2003 List"
Los Angeles, CA (April 9, 2003) =C5\ TOKYOPOP=A8 is thrilled to announce
that Volume 1 of Cowboy Bebop-one of its best selling graphic
novels-has been included on the New York Public Library's "Books For
The Teen Age 2003 List." Cowboy Bebop and its fellow honorees were
chosen for their contribution to teen readership. Marking the
occasion, the Library held a reception in March that featured special
guest authors, school librarians and publishing representatives.
The esteemed "Books For The Teen Age 2003 List" is now in its 74th
year of publication. Each year, titles are read, reviewed and
recommended for this publication by librarians for young adult
readers. The list is then sold to school and public libraries in all
50 states, as well as internationally.
"We are delighted that Cowboy Bebop has been included on this very
prestigious list," said TOKYOPOP President and COO, John Parker. "It
is truly great to see that graphic novels are becoming more widely
accepted throughout the library system. This recognition brings us
one step closer to our goal of turning 'manga' into a household word."
The Cowboy Bebop manga series launched in April 2002 as part of
TOKYOPOP's "100% Authentic Manga" line-a nine-series debut of manga
printed in its original right-to-left format that literally
transformed the graphic novel industry. TOKYOPOP manga now
consistently dominates BookScan's weekly Graphic Novel Bestseller
charts. Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star-a two-volume manga series that
provides an alternate telling of the famous TV show story-debuts from
TOKYOPOP this month.

Animation on DVD by Andy Mangels
Berkeley: Stone Bridge Press 2003
Subtitled "The Ultimate Guide" this book lives up to it's name for
titles available in the United States. With over 1,600 entries it
covers alot of ground. Each entry includes the releasing company,
year the DVD came out in the US, length, catalog number, and some
information on the director and authorship. All this followed by a
description, in the case of individually released series a
description for each disc.
Then there are separate sections for :
Mature / Adult Films, not to be confused with porn, tho' it does
include it, but titles that a parent would be reluctant for their
child to see, such as South Park or Perfect Blue. The inclusion is a
little uneven as the Ninja Scroll with its sex and violence was not
included in this section, but in such a large work there are likely
to be slip ups.
Easter Eggs. A great section for the little hidden extras many discs
contain, organized by title of work.
=46eature Films. A listing of titles that have had theatrical showings
in the United States. Unfortunately this list is only for titles
produced by US companies so many foreign titles that received
distribution are not listed. Also the list is by date, a title list
would have been useful for those trying to remember the title of a
work they saw . However the listing is only two pages long so
scanning it is not hard.
Companies & Resources. Two lists, one list is by company name,
including subsidiaries, the other for resources. Web addresses are
given.
Selected Bibliography. Books and magazines that were useful to the author.
Index. Very useful for looking up names of individuals or of titles
included in the guide.
=46or libraries and fans this is an excellent reference book for titles
available up tot he time it was released. For American animation it
will be up to date for some time as the number of titles being
released is not that great. For anime it is limited by the fact that
something like 50-80 anime videos, almost all DVD, come out a month,
even so the coverage this book gives is great and we can only hope it
sells so well that a new edition comes out every couple of years, or
even annually.

Before the Dawn by Shimazaki T=F4son
Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press 1987
This rather large work, over 750 pages, spans the entire second half
of the 19th century. Based on the author's own family, the major
character Hanzo is based on his father, this is the tale of the hopes
and disappointments felt by those who supported the Meiji restoration
and struggled with the failures to realize a more just and harmonious
society.
This work does not deal with the powerful han or the battles fought
to over throw the sh=F4gun. Rather it deals with the scholars who
sought to return to a simpler more sincere ideal of Japan, scholars
who often were from the smaller towns and villages.
Most of the story is set in the Kiso district along the T=F4sand=F4
between Ed=F4 and Kyoto, that is on the inland route through the
mountains. This rural district functions as a lens to view the
everyday oppressive acts of the bakumatsu and samurai as well as the
disruptions which took place under the new government.
If you want to catch a glimpse of Japanese life at this time this is
probably the book for you as there is a wealth of details not in the
other works I have reviewed on this period. Kenshin fans will be
especially interested in the account of the Sekihoutai as this is the
area where that group traveled on the way to Edo.

Busy month, a bad case of the flu did not help, however I am able to
get this newsletter out as well as finish up a few other
commitments. This month congratulations are due to TOKYOPOP for
Cowboy Bebop vol.1 making it on the Books For The Teen Age 2003 List
of the New York Public Library.
Good news for anime fans in Northern California, this Fall, September
13-14 to be exact, will be the Japan Town Anime Faire 2003. They
don't have a web site up yet, in fact the con was announced during
the last day of the Cherry Blossom Festival.

TOKYOPOP U.K. has partnered with Red Route Distribution Ltd. to
extend its manga business into the country's more than 2,000
bookstores. Red Route is the leading supplier of graphic novels to

THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY
Hit Graphic Novel to be Included on the "Books For The Teen Age 2003 List"
Los Angeles, CA (April 9, 2003) =C5\ TOKYOPOP=A8 is thrilled to announce
that Volume 1 of Cowboy Bebop-one of its best selling graphic
novels-has been included on the New York Public Library's "Books For
The Teen Age 2003 List." Cowboy Bebop and its fellow honorees were
chosen for their contribution to teen readership. Marking the
occasion, the Library held a reception in March that featured special
guest authors, school librarians and publishing representatives.
The esteemed "Books For The Teen Age 2003 List" is now in its 74th
year of publication. Each year, titles are read, reviewed and
recommended for this publication by librarians for young adult
readers. The list is then sold to school and public libraries in all
50 states, as well as internationally.
"We are delighted that Cowboy Bebop has been included on this very
prestigious list," said TOKYOPOP President and COO, John Parker. "It
is truly great to see that graphic novels are becoming more widely
accepted throughout the library system. This recognition brings us
one step closer to our goal of turning 'manga' into a household word."
The Cowboy Bebop manga series launched in April 2002 as part of
TOKYOPOP's "100% Authentic Manga" line-a nine-series debut of manga
printed in its original right-to-left format that literally

Animation on DVD by Andy Mangels
Berkeley: Stone Bridge Press 2003
Subtitled "The Ultimate Guide" this book lives up to it's name for
titles available in the United States. With over 1,600 entries it
covers alot of ground. Each entry includes the releasing company,
year the DVD came out in the US, length, catalog number, and some
information on the director and authorship. All this followed by a
description, in the case of individually released series a
description for each disc.
Then there are separate sections for :
Mature / Adult Films, not to be confused with porn, tho' it does
include it, but titles that a parent would be reluctant for their
child to see, such as South Park or Perfect Blue. The inclusion is a
little uneven as the Ninja Scroll with its sex and violence was not
included in this section, but in such a large work there are likely
to be slip ups.
Easter Eggs. A great section for the little hidden extras many discs
contain, organized by title of work.
=46eature Films. A listing of titles that have had theatrical showings
in the United States. Unfortunately this list is only for titles
produced by US companies so many foreign titles that received
distribution are not listed. Also the list is by date, a title list
would have been useful for those trying to remember the title of a
work they saw . However the listing is only two pages long so
scanning it is not hard.
Companies & Resources. Two lists, one list is by company name,
including subsidiaries, the other for resources. Web addresses are
given.
Selected Bibliography. Books and magazines that were useful to the author.
Index. Very useful for looking up names of individuals or of titles
included in the guide.
=46or libraries and fans this is an excellent reference book for titles
available up tot he time it was released. For American animation it
will be up to date for some time as the number of titles being
released is not that great. For anime it is limited by the fact that
something like 50-80 anime videos, almost all DVD, come out a month,
even so the coverage this book gives is great and we can only hope it
sells so well that a new edition comes out every couple of years, or
even annually.

Before the Dawn by Shimazaki T=F4son
Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press 1987
This rather large work, over 750 pages, spans the entire second half
of the 19th century. Based on the author's own family, the major
character Hanzo is based on his father, this is the tale of the hopes
and disappointments felt by those who supported the Meiji restoration
and struggled with the failures to realize a more just and harmonious
society.
This work does not deal with the powerful han or the battles fought
to over throw the sh=F4gun. Rather it deals with the scholars who
sought to return to a simpler more sincere ideal of Japan, scholars
who often were from the smaller towns and villages.
Most of the story is set in the Kiso district along the T=F4sand=F4
between Ed=F4 and Kyoto, that is on the inland route through the
mountains. This rural district functions as a lens to view the
everyday oppressive acts of the bakumatsu and samurai as well as the
disruptions which took place under the new government.
If you want to catch a glimpse of Japanese life at this time this is
probably the book for you as there is a wealth of details not in the
other works I have reviewed on this period. Kenshin fans will be
especially interested in the account of the Sekihoutai as this is the
area where that group traveled on the way to Edo.
