View Full Version : .gz and archived fanfics

I've downloaded some fanfics from
ftp://ftp.cs.ubc.ca/pub/archive/anime-fan-works/ with the .gz extention. Now
my zip utility (Ultimatezip) handles GZIP files, but many of the files look
like they're unzipping though there is no unzipped file when done. I
presume that means the files are corrupted, but since I admit that I'm not
the brightest bulb on the tree, I wonder if anyone can tell me if I might be
doing something wrong?
Thanks.

There are no corrupted files in the archive itself (that I am aware of).
One possible explanation might be that you are downloading them in ascii
mode rather than binary mode. On most non-Unix systems, downloading gz
files in ascii will almost certainly corrupt them.
Brian.

Thank you Brian. I'm still pulling out valuable hair as I can't get my 2 FTP
clients (LeechFTP and WS_Ftp) to work downloading these. I'm obviously in
over my head, but you have no doubt set me in the right direction. Thanks.

I've no idea why you're having problems with the downloaded .gz files,
but there is a hidden feature of ftp.cs.ubc.ca : If you request a path
with the same name as a .gz file, but without the .gz, the ftp server
will magically gunzip it for you, and send you the plain text file.
For example (picking the first file in .../Ranma/) : If you were to
download:
ftp://ftp.cs.ubc.ca/pub/archive/anime-fan-works/Ranma/ranma.007
You'll get it, even though the filename is listed as ranma.007.gz.
