EVA was the original brain child of Anno Hideaki and was not based on a
manga; he wrote it from scratch and as an anime. There is an EVA manga,
but the manga is based on the TV show. Nadesico is a series that was
created after EVA (I think), so it did not cause EVA's spawning.

There could be works similar to EVA; I doubt it has the market on
psychedilic giant robot animation. But I'm fairly sure EVA was not
directly inspired by any one show or movie that came before it.

I believe the TV series and the manga were created at the same time.
They wrote the script and the character designs, then separated into
two groups, one to do the TV series and the other to do the manga.
Surpisingly they finished the TV series way, way ahead of the manga.
(I am not sure if they even finished the manga yet.)

The manga was started 9 months ahead of the anime in Shonen A(ce);
the story is simply credited to Gainax (like all their properties), tho'
it is clearly Sadamoto's interpretation in the manga. The manga
is still running; I have read up to the November issue of A(ce) (Eva
didn't appear in Dec. issue) and the core story is up to events
that happened in ep.22 of the TV series.
