Editorial

The last issue of the year, already seven years of my reporting on
forthcoming anime and manga releases has passed and next month another
will begin. This past year the industry has seen many changes with even
more companies going to DVD only for video, Newtype USA, Raijin, and
Shonen Jump starting publication, a dramatic increase in the number of
graphic novels coming out, more anime on TV and yet this is still a
niche market, a big niche market but still a niche market. I won't
really be considering anime and manga mainstream until regular TV
entertainment shows and newspaper columns start reporting on them
regularly. That said existing fans have quite a chore ahead sharing
their accumulated knowledge with newer fans, and they seem to be doing
so with gusto. To the new fans I say welcome, to the company reps
reading this I say congratulations for a good year's work, to the
retailers I say sell more product.

The past several weeks have been good to me my KOR DVD replacement discs
arrived from AnimEigo, as did the first manga volumes of Cannon God
Exaxxion, Prowling Red Devil, Lupin III and Firefighter! Daigo of Fire
Company M.

I also passed the 400 new entry mark for the additions to the Anime
Companion supplement on the web. www.koyagi.com/ACPages/ACmain.html

Well enough of this, gotta get this issue out to folks

Number of New Entries in this issue:

ADV LAUNCHES DEDICATED WEBSITE FOR "THE PRINCESS BLADE"

FEATURE FILM SLATED FOR THEATRICAL RELEASE IN EARLY 2003; SITE CONTAINS
EXTENSIVE PRODUCTION BACKGROUND, OTHER CONTENT

ADV Films announced the launch of
http://www.theprincessblade.com, a new, content-rich website dedicated
to "The Princess Blade." This long-awaited Japanese martial arts
spectacular feature film (aka "Shurayukihime"), has been
enthusiastically received by audiences and critics in festival
screenings on three continents, and is slated for U.S. theatrical
release in early 2003.

"The Princess Blade" Website Content:
The website includes details of the film's plot, background on the
production, the film's staff, the actors, and a list of selected
film-festival screenings. A trailer for the film is forthcoming, and
will be available for download >from the site. Visitors can enter email
contact information to be notified of updates to the site.

Production Credits
"Princess Blade" is directed by Shinsuke Sato; special effects are by
the renowned Shinji Higuchi (well-known for his work on the modern
"Gamera" series). Hong Kong-native fight choreographer Donnie Yen
(fresh from his acclaimed work on the Wesley Snipes blockbuster "Blade
II") handles the balletic combat scenes.

"Princess Blade:" The Story
The film, which combines elements of classic Japanese Samurai drama with
a futuristic setting, tells the story of Princess Yuki (Japanese
superstar actress Yumiko Shaku), of the House of Takemikazuchi-once a
force of noble guards for the Mikado elite, but now an exiled and
disgraced band of assassins, willing to take on any task for the right
price.

Yuki is a ruthlessly efficient member of the clan, paid by the
authoritarian government to eliminate members of a rebellious
insurrectionist group. But when a mysterious stranger tells Yuki the
truth about her mother's death-that she was killed by a member of the
House of Takemikazuchi-Yuki confronts the killer and, after a fierce
battle, is forced to flee. A troubled young man named Takashi (Hideaki
Ito, one of Japan's most popular film actors) comes to her aid. But
Takashi is wary, for he works with the rebels whom the Takemikazuchi
have targeted for elimination.

Gradually, Yuki and Takashi come to terms with one another. But the
threat of the Takemikazuchi looms-they will not tolerate the departure
of one of their own, and they are closing in...

Distribution
ADV Films is currently finalizing screening arrangements for the title;
initial cinema bookings will be announced early in 2003.

FINALLY! THE ANIME NETWORK(tm) FORMAT DETAILS

FIRST DEBUT AS PART OF COMCAST'S VIDEO-ON-DEMAND SERVICE

After an initial news release that created a veritable storm of
curiosity and speculation within the fan community and the industry at
large, ADV Films today announced details about the impending launch of
The Anime Network(tm). The network will go on the air in a series of
stepped-up phases, with Phase One a mid-December launch as part of
Comcast Cable's video-on-demand (VOD) initiative in the Philadelphia
area, delivering programs directly to viewers, at their request, at any
time.

Comcast's VOD service-including The Anime Network(tm)-is available to
approximately 1.2 million customers in the Philadelphia area. The Anime
Networkä is the first television channel in North America dedicated to
anime (Japanese animation) and anime-related content.

Leadership at The Anime Network(tm) described the decision to launch
Phase One via VOD service as one of complementary strengths. "We're very
excited to have completed this deal with Comcast; their VOD
functionality is a perfect fit for our first step. Plus, we believe that
on-demand systems are going to be a strong and enduring element of the
direct-delivered home entertainment industry," said John Ledford,
President and CEO of A.D. Vision, Inc., parent company of The Anime
Network(tm) and ADV Films.

"For our audience, a video-on-demand-based launch is quite perfect,"
Ledford continued. "Anime fans are really the ultimate
early-adopters-they're very tech savvy, and will be quick to appreciate
the benefits of on-demand functionality."

Content
The Anime Network(tm) model is structured around four categorized
content areas: Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy, and Martial Arts. The
mid-December launch of The Anime Network(tm) will include approximately
25 hours of available content, including both feature films and episodes
from series. Titles will include "Spriggan," "Neon Genesis Evangelion,"
"Excel Saga," "Martian Successor Nadesico," "Gasaraki," "Noir,"
"Dai-Guard," "Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040," "Orphen," Golden Boy,"
"Sorcerer Hunters," Kimera," "Ninja Resurrection," "Tekken," "Those Who
Hunt Elves," "Gunsmith Cats," "Burn Up W" and "Samurai X: The Motion
Picture." Viewers in the Philadelphia area wishing to confirm
availability of The Anime Network in their specific areas can do so by
visiting http://www.comcast.com.

The Anime Networkä: Ongoing Plans
Leadership at The Anime Network confirms that the network will be going
online with several other major national cable providers to bring The
Anime Networkä to millions of viewers in service areas across North
America. The Anime Network's web address is

VIZ Clarifies International Sales Policy

To Our Loyal Fans And Customers:

While Viz is an integral part in acquiring, translating, and
distributing Japanese manga and anime titles to English-speaking
audiences, our current agreements with Japanese publishers limit our
distribution to North America only—legally this means that Viz and its
distributors cannot sell its merchandise overseas. To honor and maintain
our licensing contracts, we are unable to distribute our titles
worldwide and must limit our distribution to North America, at this time.

We realize the disappointment this causes, but hope customers and fans
understand that in order to continue bringing Japanese storylines to
English-speaking audiences, Viz needs to remain loyal to its contracts
to ensure that it retains them. Adherence to the conditions outlined in
our contracts guarantees that we can continue with our current titles
and acquire new ones in the future.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please
understand that we are doing all we can to bring our love of manga and
anime to the world, and are currently pursuing worldwide distribution
rights for our titles. Until these rights are secured, we hope you know
how much we value you—our loyal customers and fans—and appreciate your
patience and understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,
Viz Communications, Inc.
