God, I love irony.
(But yes, I agree--it IS *way* past time this problem was fixed. Especially
as it is indicative of a MAJOR security hole in the list software...)

WHAT A GREAT IDEA!
We provide a concept that will allow anyone with sufficient work experience
to obtain a fully verifiable University Degree.
Bachelors, Masters or even a Doctorate.
Think of it, within four to six weeks, you too could be a college graduate

I wasn't going to say anything, but I was definitely thinking it.

It's not so much a security hole in the list software as a remnant of
earlier times. The FFML runs off of software that is very similar to how
the old Bitnet lists used to run. Those lists didn't have spam blocking,
but they also didn't really need it, because spam wasn't anywhere near as
prevalent as it is these days.
As it is, this may require changing software. Alternatively, find a way to
'moderate' people who subscribe until they post their first (few)
message(s). If they're spammers, they get tossed off the list. If not,
they get their moderation removed. I know the FFML can prevent people from
posting. I'm just not certain that that can be set to happen automatically
upon subscription.
As a note, this is not (directly) because of the expansion of the FFML's
role. Not that I think many people will think that, but if there's even
one person, it's good to say it. The FFML is not that difficult to get
onto. The problems have been more that it was difficult to find. And, in
increasing our presence (in any of the ways we have), we've made ourselves
a target for spammers.

Actually, given the headers on these spam posts, it's not that the FFML
*specifically* is being targeted, it's that the ENTIRE ANIFICS DOMAIN is
being targeted.

That's true, but the FFML automatically bounces any messages sent from
addresses that aren't on the list. Or at least it keeps bouncing my
messages when I accidentally send from the enteract.com version of my
address. That means the guy has to subscribe in order to spam the entire
domain.

Okay people, enough. We've noticed it and I'm sure PMak's looking into
the problem, as he doesn't like his server being used as a spam redirector
any more than you all enjoy receiving the stuff.

And just for everybody's information, the From: addresses on spam emails are
generally forged. If <azhrael (AT) anifics (DOT) com> had really sent these messages, we'd
ban him. He didn't. He is a legitimate subscriber whose address is being spoofed
onto these posts.
